Ruins

 

次の日は朝別のトレイルを歩いた後フラグスタッフに戻ってその周辺の公園に行きました。強烈なインデアンの遺跡を見ました。ウォルナットキャニオンには標高2000mの岩肌に洞穴を作って住んでいたホピ族の遺跡があります。崖は深すぎて下は見えません。まずは何段も何段も階段を下りてから切り立った崖にある遺跡を回ります。ゆりは少し怖かったみたいです。人が住んでいたなんて思えないけど、でもそこにいたという証拠がはっきりと残っているのです。不思議でした。次に見た遺跡、広い砂漠の真ん中にあるウパッキとウコキ遺跡でもそう思いました。恐らく彼らの住んでいた1200年頃にはもう少し環境はましだったのかもしれない、と思っても、やっぱりとても厳しくて本当にできたのかどうか考えると神秘的です。このウパッキ公園の中には1000年頃に噴火したと考えられる火山の影響が残されていました。山が半分黒い砂に覆われて未だに植物が生えていません。地面は広範囲にわたって掘り起こされたように荒れ果てた冷えたマグマに覆われていました。自然の恐ろしさ、神の力強さを考えずにはいられない、そんな場所でした。

We drove back to Flagstaff on the next day and visited a few more parks around there. Walnut Canyon National Monument is remarkable, truly beyond your imagination! Middle row and left down corner pics were taken there. It is the ruins of dwelling of Hopi, native Indian tribe who lived in cliff around 1200AD. First, we went down hundreds of stairsteps. Then we went around the cliff to see the ruins. The canyon rim elevation is about 7000ft. Too deep to see the bottom. I just can't imagine how they lived there but ruins are there to tell that they were there. Not too far from there, we also visited another ruins, Wupatki and Wukoki pueblo in the middle of vast dessert. Probably environment was better when they lived but still it seemed very hard and mysterious. A part of Wupatki National Monument also tells us about the volcano which exploded around 1000AD. A half of mountain still covered with sand and no plants growing and vast area of ground was covered with cooled lava. It strongly reminds us of the power of the nature.
